Home battery or solar panels first?
Solar panels generate electricity during the day; a battery shifts it to the evening. Which one you should get first depends on what drives your electricity bill.

What you need to know
- Solar panels without a battery often sell surplus power to the grid at low rates
- A battery provides immediate benefits from the spot price spread, even in winter
- Together, they significantly increase your self-consumption of electricity
If you already have solar panels
A battery is the natural next step. Daytime surplus generation is stored and used in the evening when electricity is most expensive. The Emaldo system connects to your existing solar PV setup.
If you don't have solar panels yet
In Finland, solar generation is concentrated in summer, but spot price spreads are at their highest in winter. That's why a battery can deliver value year-round even before panels. Panels can be added later.

Frequently asked questions
Questions about this guide's topic
Can a battery be retrofitted to an existing solar PV system?
Yes. We assess your current inverter and propose a system that works with it.
Is there enough solar power in winter to charge the battery?
Usually not, but in winter the battery charges from the grid during cheap hours, so the benefits continue all year round.
